Last week, I had the opportunity to try something I’ve wanted to do since I was a kid. I got to scuba dive. Well, it was just a lesson and it was in the hotel pool - but that still counts.

D uring the week of August 14, THE PHYSICIAN AND SPORTSMEDICINE (PSM)and the wider sports medicine communitysuffered a double loss: the deaths of our editors emeritus Allan J. Ryan, MD, and Richard H. Strauss, MD. Both served as editors-in-chief for nearly 13 years, and both will be remembered for the vital roles they played in the early evolution of sports medicine.

From a purely meteorological perspective, it was fascinating to watch. I had to go in early today for a meeting (about 1:00) and looked at the radar presentation of Rita. It had a poorly defined eye that wasn’t completely closed. Its appearance was also very ragged.

Movie hunk Paul Walker suffered for his art on the set of deep sea adventure Into The Blue - he had to work with a gash on his head. The amateur surfer and diver cracked his skull against a cave wall while performing an underwater scene and blood gushed from his head.
