Broody squid carry their eggs in their arms
A broody species of squid has been found to carry thousands of its eggs under its many arms. It is the first species of squid known to look after its clutch. Previously, it had been thought that squid would be incapable of caring for their eggs as the health of most species deteriorates rapidly after laying eggs. Most adult squid become extremely gelatinous as their muscles degenerate after egg-laying and they die shortly afterwards.

New Study Measures Nitrogen Narcosis
The narcotic effect of nitrogen impairs diver performance and limits dive profiles, especially for deep dives using compressed air. A new study attempts to establish measurable correlates of nitrogen narcosis using EEG (an electroencephalogram which records electrical waves of the brain). If confirmed by studies with larger case series, the researchers hope that EEG patterns could be used to identify nitrogen narcosis for various gas mixtures and prevent the dangerous impact of nitrogen on diver performance.

Cozumel divers asked to Help with Reef Resoration
A fragile coral reef off the coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula could take more than a century to recover from a thrashing by Hurricane Wilma last month, the government said Friday. The storm’s three-day rampage across the eastern region in late October damaged a 25-mile stretch of delicate reefs off the island of Cozumel. A team of 10 divers and conservationists have begun rebuilding sections of the damaged reef, using pneumatic drills to bore holes in sea-bed rocks to reattach loose coral fragments with epoxy cement. The restoration work is painstaking and volunteer sport divers in the Cancun area are being asked to help.

Stinging Fire Coral
Fire corals sting divers who brush their skin against them, causing burning and itching. If this happens to you rinse with seawater and apply vinegar or methylated alcohol on the affected area. Colonies of fire coral are extremely important in building coral reefs. However, they are not true corals. They are, in fact, hydroids. There are several species, with different growth forms. Some look like plates, some are encrusting but maybe the most familiar is the branching form. Divers come across fire corals on reefs throughout the world, in sheltered and exposed sites, in shallow and deep water. They are often at the reef edge as they can withstand rough waters. Look at the orientation of the coral branches: they grow so as to minimise their exposure to the waves.

Great Galloping Crinoids: Lilylike sea animal takes a brisk walk
A video has caught an underwater animal, which looks like a flower, practically jogging along the ocean bottom. The stalked crinoid spends most of its time sitting and catching food with the flowerlike wheel of feathery arms that have earned it and its relatives the nickname sea lilies. Scientists had known for decades that stalked crinoids sometimes move - but barely. They had been clocked at speeds no greater than 0.6 metres per hour. Now, however, a video from a submersible dive off Grand Bahama Island reveals movement as fast as 140 metres per hour.

Sunrise Diving, Thailand
Completely re-vamped dive center following their devastating loss in the Tsunami on Patong Beach Front, Phuket, Thailand. “I recently went diving with Sunrise Diving. I have been diving for years now all around the world and this has to be one of the best diving companies I have been with. They had a brand new shop, classrooms, equipment and boats. This is due to the Tsunami and they lost everything as they are located on the beach in Patong. I went there to see if the Tsunami had affected the reefs and I am pleased to say they are beautiful and untouched. Their new boat had everything you would ever want on a day trip boat. Showers, towels, bar, music and more. The best thing for Thailand was that there were no hidden costs as everything was included in the cost of the trip, lots of great food and all drinks. Usually Thailand companies charge extra for these facilities. A very nice change. Excellent value for money. I would recommend this company to anybody who has been diving for years or who is about to start.”
